Brain Spotting tHERAPY

When words aren't enough, therapy can help you work with what your body is holding.

Sometimes you can explain exactly what happened—but still feel like your body hasn't gotten the message that you're safe.

You may understand your triggers, know where they came from, and even have insight into your patterns, yet still experience anxiety, emotional overwhelm, physical tension, shutdown, or reactions that seem bigger than the situation in front of you.

Brainspotting is a focused therapeutic approach that can help you slow down, notice what is happening internally, and process experiences that may be difficult to reach through conversation alone.

At Riverside Counseling, Brainspotting is integrated into a broader, individualized approach to therapy. We combine focused attention, body awareness, emotional processing, and evidence-informed clinical interventions to help you move from insight toward meaningful change.

What Is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a therapeutic approach that uses focused eye positions, attention, and body awareness as part of the therapeutic process.

The approach is based on the idea that where we look can influence what we notice and experience internally. During a Brainspotting session, your therapist may help you identify a particular point in your visual field that seems connected to an emotional or physical response.

Rather than forcing you to tell the entire story over and over, the work can involve slowing down and becoming curious about what you notice in your body, emotions, thoughts, and sensations.

You remain in control throughout the process.

Brainspotting is not about making you relive an experience or digging for memories you don't want to access. It is about creating a focused space where your mind and body can process what is present at a pace that feels manageable.

Who May Benefit From Brainspotting?

Brainspotting may be considered as part of therapy for people experiencing:

  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress
  • Anxiety and emotional overwhelm
  • Distressing or persistent memories
  • Grief and loss
  • Emotional responses that feel difficult to control
  • Chronic stress or nervous-system activation
  • Shame or deeply rooted emotional patterns
  • Relationship or attachment-related difficulties
  • Life experiences that continue to affect the present
  • Performance-related blocks or emotional barriers
  • Feeling stuck despite having significant insight

Brainspotting is not the right approach for every person or every concern.

Your treatment plan is individualized based on your history, goals, current needs, and clinical presentation.

What Does a Brainspotting Session Look Like?

Brainspotting sessions are collaborative and individualized.

Your therapist may begin by helping you identify what you would like to work on and noticing how that experience shows up emotionally or physically.

You may then be guided to pay attention to your visual field while noticing changes in your internal experience. Depending on your needs, you may notice:

  • A shift in physical sensations
  • Changes in emotions
  • Memories or associations
  • Thoughts or beliefs
  • Areas of tension or activation
  • A sense of relief or settling
  • New perspectives or insights

You don't have to know exactly what is happening for the process to be useful. Your job is not to perform therapy correctly. Your job is to notice.

Your therapist helps provide structure, safety, and support while you remain an active participant in the process.

Brainspotting and the Body

Emotional experiences are not always experienced as thoughts.

Sometimes they show up as:

  • A tight chest
  • A clenched jaw
  • A knot in your stomach
  • Restlessness
  • Numbness
  • Muscle tension
  • Feeling frozen
  • Racing thoughts
  • A strong urge to escape
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself

Brainspotting can be incorporated into a somatic, body-aware approach to therapy, allowing attention to both your psychological experience and the physical sensations accompanying it. This does not mean that every physical sensation has a hidden meaning. Instead, we become curious about what your body is communicating in the moment and use that information to guide the therapeutic process.

Brainspotting for Trauma

Trauma can change the way we respond to people, situations, memories, and perceived threats.

Sometimes the thinking part of you knows, "I'm safe now," while another part of you continues to react as though the danger is still happening.

Brainspotting may be incorporated into trauma therapy when appropriate to help you work with emotional and physiological responses that remain active in the present. Trauma treatment at Riverside Counseling is individualized. Depending on your needs, Brainspotting may be combined with or considered alongside:

  • EMDR therapy
  • Somatic and nervous-system approaches
  • Integrative Depth-Oriented Therapy
  • Cognitive and behavioral approaches
  • Attachment-focused therapy
  • Mindfulness-based interventions
  • Other evidence-informed therapeutic strategies

The goal is not simply to revisit what happened.

The goal is to help you develop a different relationship with what happened—and with yourself.

Brainspotting vs. Traditional Talk Therapy

Talk therapy can be incredibly effective. For many people, putting experiences into words is an important part of healing.

But sometimes you can talk about something repeatedly without feeling any different.

You may say:

"I know why I do this."

"I understand where it comes from."

"I've talked about it a hundred times."

And yet the reaction remains.

Brainspotting offers another way to approach therapy by incorporating focused attention and awareness of your internal experience rather than relying exclusively on verbal processing.

At Riverside Counseling, it doesn't have to be either/or.

We can use the approach that fits you—not force you into one method.

Brainspotting Is Part of a Bigger Picture

Riverside Counseling takes an integrative approach to therapy.

Brainspotting may be one part of your treatment rather than the entire treatment plan.

As therapy progresses, we may incorporate other approaches based on your goals and what is clinically appropriate.

That may include EMDR, Somatic & Nervous System Therapy, Integrative Depth-Oriented Therapy, CBT, ACT, solution-focused therapy, attachment-based interventions, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and other evidence-informed approaches.

This allows therapy to address both:

Insight: Understanding your patterns, emotions, relationships, experiences, and protective responses.

Action: Learning how to respond differently, build new skills, regulate your nervous system, and create meaningful change.

Where Insight Meets Action.

Is Brainspotting Right for You?

Brainspotting may be worth exploring if you:

  • Feel like you understand your problems intellectually but still feel stuck
  • Notice strong emotional or physical reactions that don't seem to match the present situation
  • Want a therapy approach that includes body awareness
  • Have experiences that are difficult to put into words
  • Want to work beyond symptom management
  • Are interested in trauma-informed, integrative therapy
  • Want to move at a pace that respects your nervous system

Compassionate Therapy With Accountability

At Riverside Counseling, therapy is not about judging you for the patterns that developed to help you survive.

It's also not about staying stuck in those patterns forever.

We believe you can understand where your patterns came from and learn to respond differently.

You will be met with compassion, curiosity, and respect—and safely held accountable for the changes you want to make.
