Experience Somatic Healing

Discover holistic healing with Somatic Therapy. Connect mind, body, and emotions for true relief.

At Riverside Counseling, Somatic Therapy offers a compassionate, trauma-informed approach that recognizes the powerful connection between your thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and nervous system. While traditional talk therapy focuses on thoughts and experiences, somatic approaches also explore how stress, trauma, and life experiences may be held within the body. Somatic Therapy helps you reconnect with yourself, increase awareness of your body’s signals, and develop healthier ways to regulate emotions, manage stress, and create a greater sense of safety and balance.

I often get asked: "What Does 'Somatic' mean"?

The word somatic comes from the Greek word “sōma,” meaning “body.”

Somatic therapy recognizes the deep connection between the body, brain, nervous system, emotions, and our lived experiences.

Our bodies often communicate what our minds may not always have words for.

Stress, trauma, and difficult experiences can influence how we feel, respond, connect with others, and move through the world.

Somatic-informed therapy helps us become more aware of the signals our body and nervous system send, while developing skills to support regulation, healing, and a greater sense of safety within ourselves. By exploring the connection between mind and body, we can better understand patterns, release unhelpful responses, and develop new ways of responding to life’s challenges with greater awareness and resilience.

Somatic Therapy is a body-centered therapeutic approach that focuses on the relationship between the body and emotional experiences. Our bodies often respond to stress and trauma through patterns of tension, avoidance, shutdown, hypervigilance, or emotional overwhelm. Through gentle, mindful exploration, Somatic Therapy supports you in noticing these patterns and building a stronger connection with your body and inner experience.

Somatic Therapy may include:

  • Developing awareness of physical sensations and emotions
  • Exploring nervous system responses
  • Practicing grounding and regulation skills
  • Increasing body awareness and self-compassion
  • Identifying patterns connected to stress and trauma
  • Building a greater sense of safety within yourself

How Somatic Therapy Can Help

Somatic Therapy may be beneficial for individuals experiencing:

  • Trauma and complex trauma (C-PTSD)
  • Anxiety and chronic stress
  • Emotional overwhelm or difficulty regulating emotions
  • PTSD and traumatic life experiences
  • Burnout and compassion fatigue
  • Low self-esteem and negative self-beliefs
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or your body
  • Relationship challenges and attachment wounds
  • Life transitions and personal growth
  • Stress stored through mind-body patterns

A Nervous System Approach to Healing

Many people learn to survive difficult experiences by adapting through fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses.

While these responses can be protective, they may continue long after the original stress or trauma has passed.

Somatic Therapy supports healing by helping you:

  • Recognize your body’s stress responses
  • Build emotional regulation skills
  • Increase your ability to feel grounded and present
  • Develop healthier coping strategies
  • Create a stronger sense of self-trust and resilience

Somatic Therapy at Riverside Counseling

At Riverside Counseling, Somatic Therapy is integrated with trauma-informed approaches including EMDR, CBT, mindfulness-based interventions, and nervous system regulation strategies. Therapy is paced according to your needs, honoring your experiences and creating space for healing without judgment.

You do not have to relive every painful detail to heal. Sometimes healing begins by learning to listen to what your body has been carrying and creating a new relationship with yourself. ~Anna
