Depression Therapy

Depression Therapy in Brainerd, MN

Depression can make even ordinary things feel exhausting. You may feel disconnected from yourself, overwhelmed by emotions, numb, irritable, hopeless, or like you’re simply going through the motions.

At Riverside Counseling, compassionate, trauma-informed depression therapy for adolescents and adults is available throughout Brainerd and Central Minnesota, with both in-person and telehealth options available.

You don’t have to wait until things become unbearable to ask for help.

What Depression Can Look Like

Depression isn’t always obvious. It can look like sadness, but it can also show up as anger, anxiety, withdrawal, exhaustion, perfectionism, or feeling completely numb.

You may be experiencing:

  • Persistent sadness or emptiness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in things you once enjoyed
  • Low motivation or difficulty getting started
  • Fatigue and feeling emotionally drained
  • Sleep changes, including sleeping too much or too little
  • Changes in appetite or eating patterns
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Irritability, frustration, or emotional shutdown
  • Feelings of guilt, shame, worthlessness, or inadequacy
  • Social withdrawal or isolation
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or others
  • Difficulty keeping up with work, school, parenting, or daily responsibilities
  • Feeling hopeless about the future

Sometimes depression doesn’t feel like sadness at all.

Sometimes it feels like “I don’t even recognize myself anymore.”

Depression and Trauma Can Be Connected

For many people, depression doesn’t happen in isolation.

Trauma, chronic stress, relationship difficulties, grief, childhood experiences, major life transitions, burnout, and prolonged emotional overwhelm can all contribute to depressive symptoms.

When your nervous system has been operating in survival mode for too long, shutting down can become a form of protection.

That’s why depression therapy at Riverside Counseling looks beyond simply trying to “think positive.”

We work to understand what your mind, body, and nervous system have been carrying and develop practical ways to help you reconnect with yourself.

Our Approach to Depression Therapy

Your treatment is individualized based on your symptoms, history, goals, strengths, and readiness.

Depending on your needs, therapy may incorporate:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT can help identify patterns of negative thinking, self-criticism, hopelessness, and cognitive distortions that can reinforce depression.

Together, we work toward developing more balanced thinking and healthier behavioral patterns.

Trauma-Informed Therapy

When depression is connected to trauma or chronic stress, treatment needs to account for the impact those experiences can have on emotional regulation, relationships, self-worth, and the nervous system.

Therapy is paced around your safety and readiness rather than forcing you to process more than you’re prepared to handle.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) may be appropriate when unresolved traumatic experiences are contributing to depression, anxiety, shame, intrusive memories, or emotional dysregulation.

Somatic Therapy

Depression can affect more than your thoughts.

It can affect your energy, body, sleep, breathing, motivation, and ability to feel connected to yourself.

Somatic approaches can help you notice and work with the physical and nervous-system components of emotional distress.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting may be incorporated when appropriate to help clients process difficult emotional experiences and patterns that can be difficult to access through traditional talk therapy alone.

Behavioral Activation

Depression often creates a cycle:

Low mood → withdrawal → less activity → less connection → increased depression.

Therapy can help you gradually rebuild meaningful activity, structure, connection, and experiences of accomplishment without expecting you to “just snap out of it.”

Therapy for Different Types of Depression

Depressive symptoms can occur in many different circumstances.

Riverside Counseling can help address depression associated with:

  • Major depressive disorder
  • Persistent depressive symptoms
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Anxiety and chronic stress
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Parenting stress
  • Life transitions
  • Burnout
  • Low self-esteem and shame
  • Chronic emotional overwhelm
  • Significant changes in identity or circumstances

A thorough diagnostic assessment can help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms and what level of treatment is appropriate.

Depression in Adolescents

Depression can look different in teenagers and young people.

Instead of saying “I’m depressed,” a teen may show:

  • Irritability
  • Anger
  • Withdrawal
  • Changes in school performance
  • Sleep changes
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Increased conflict
  • Changes in friendships
  • Low self-esteem
  • Risk-taking behaviors
  • Frequent physical complaints
  • Feeling misunderstood or disconnected

Therapy provides a space where young people can talk openly without feeling judged or lectured.

Parents and caregivers may also be involved when clinically appropriate.

You Don’t Have to Have Everything Figured Out

You don’t need to know exactly why you’re depressed before beginning therapy.

You don’t need the perfect explanation.

You don’t need to prove that things are “bad enough.”

You can simply start with:

“I’m not okay, and I don’t want to keep feeling this way.”

That’s enough.

What to Expect

Your first sessions focus on understanding what’s happening and determining what kind of support would be most helpful.

We’ll explore:

  • What you’re experiencing now
  • How long you’ve been struggling
  • Your personal and family history
  • Trauma and significant life experiences when relevant
  • Current stressors
  • Sleep and daily functioning
  • Relationships and support systems
  • Your strengths and existing coping skills
  • Your goals for therapy

From there, we’ll develop a treatment approach that fits you.

Therapy isn’t about becoming someone else.

It’s about helping you reconnect with the parts of yourself that depression may have buried.
