About EMDR

What Makes EMDR Different?

How EMDR Works

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, your mind keeps returning to painful memories, difficult experiences, or patterns that no longer serve you. Trauma, stress, anxiety, grief, anger, and overwhelming life events can leave the nervous system feeling stuck long after the event is over.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, your mind keeps returning to painful memories, difficult experiences, or patterns that no longer serve you. Trauma, stress, anxiety, grief, anger, and overwhelming life events can leave the nervous system feeling stuck long after the event is over.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy designed to help the brain process and heal from those experiences, so they no longer carry the same emotional weight. Rather than simply talking about what happened, EMDR helps your brain do what it was naturally designed to do: heal.

EMDR is not just about processing old memories.

At Riverside Counseling, we work to:

Heal the past by reprocessing distressing experiences.

Strengthen the present by reducing current triggers and emotional distress.

Prepare for the future by building confidence, resilience, and healthier ways of responding to life's challenges.

How EMDR Works

When a traumatic or highly distressing event occurs, the brain can sometimes store that experience in a way that keeps it feeling present, even years later. This can show up as:

  • Anxiety and panic
  • PTSD and trauma symptoms
  • Negative self-beliefs
  • Emotional overwhelm
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Grief and loss
  • Childhood wounds

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Persistent stress reactions

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or other methods) to activate the brain's natural healing process. As the memory is reprocessed, the emotional intensity decreases and new, healthier perspectives emerge.

Many clients report that memories that once felt overwhelming begin to feel distant, manageable, and no longer in control of their lives.

Is EMDR Right for Me?

If you feel stuck in patterns that don't make sense, continue to react strongly to certain situations, or carry experiences that still affect your daily life, EMDR may be an effective option.

At Riverside Counseling, EMDR is integrated with trauma-informed, neuroscience-based care to help you move beyond survival mode and reconnect with the life you want to live.

Riverside Counseling uses a client-centered approach, working collaboratively with our clients to identify their goals and develop a customized treatment plan. We also place a strong emphasis on building a trusting and supportive therapeutic relationship.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to repeatedly tell your story or relive every painful detail.

Instead, EMDR allows your brain and nervous system to process the experience in a way that promotes lasting healing. Many clients experience significant shifts in how they think, feel, and respond to triggers without spending years discussing the same event.

The goal isn't to erase the memory.

The goal is to remove the emotional charge attached to it. You remember what happened—but it no longer controls you.

What Can EMDR Help With?

EMDR is effective for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Childhood abuse or neglect
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Depression
  • Grief and loss
  • First responder and military trauma
  • Relationship wounds
  • Low self-esteem and negative core beliefs
  • Medical trauma
  • Stress and life transitions
  • Addiction recovery and relapse triggers
