The Research About EMDR & Brain Spotting Therapy for Trauma

When people begin trauma therapy, one of the most common questions is: “Does this actually work?” The answer depends on the approach—and the research behind it. Two therapies often used in trauma treatment are EMDR and Brainspotting.

Get in Touch

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is one of the most well-researched trauma therapies available today.

Peer-reviewed studies and international treatment guidelines show that EMDR can:

  • Reduce PTSD symptoms significantly
  • Help the brain reprocess distressing memories in a less overwhelming way
  • Work as effectively as trauma-focused CBT for many people
  • Produce meaningful improvement often within a shorter treatment timeline

Because of this, EMDR is recommended as a first-line treatment for PTSD by major clinical organizations, including global health authorities.

Brain Spotting

Brain Spotting is a newer, evolving trauma therapy that is increasingly used in clinical settings.

Current research is more limited, but early studies and clinical outcomes suggest it may help with:

  • Trauma-related emotional distress
  • Nervous system dysregulation (fight/flight/freeze responses)
  • Somatic (body-based) trauma symptoms
  • Anxiety and emotional overwhelm

While it does not yet have the same level of large-scale research as EMDR, many clients and clinicians report meaningful benefit, especially when traditional talk therapy hasn’t fully helped

Real, Effective Results in Therapy

Different approaches work for different nervous systems and life experiences.

In my practice, EMDR is often used when there is clear trauma history and strong evidence-based targeting is helpful. Brain Spotting may be integrated when trauma is stored more in the body or difficult to access through traditional narrative processing.

Both approaches focus on one goal:
helping your brain and body process what got stuck—so it no longer feels as overwhelming today.
